The world of body and energy work is vast and also evolving all the time. Our team offers a diverse range of modalities from reiki, to therapeutic stretching, to deep tissue. And each technique is applied with a lighter or firmer touch depending on the techniques protocol, the therapist and the clients needs.
It is very important to ALWAYS speak up and let your therapist know if you need the pressure to be corrected. Everyone’s body responds differently to bodywork, some days you may feel you need a lighter touch, while on other days you may feel you could stand a little more pressure. We provide a pressure scale chart so that you can find a therapist who matches your preference. For information deep pressure v. deep tissue please continue reading below.
Deep Tissue ≠ Pressure
Deep Tissue massage is actually it's own modality whose pressure can vary from light to firm. This technique targets different muscle groups by applying varying levels of sustained pressure to help break up scar tissue, tension and address range of motion issues.
Deep pressure massage is just what it sounds like - any modality preformed with more, or deeper pressure. Techniques that are often (but not always) administered with firmer pressure include but are not limited to: Swedish, Deep Tissue, Reflexology, Neuromuscular, Myofascial Release, Acupressure, Sports, Shiatsu, Polarity Therapy and Trigger Point.
We often think that unless we are receiving intense pressure nothing is going to change. This is simply not the case. There are several modalities whose protocol usually requires light to almost no pressure but can still have profound results. These include but are not limited to: Craniosacral Therapy, John Barnes Myofascial Release, Lymphatic Drainage, and energy based techniques like Reiki or Chakra Balancing.
Most massage therapists specialize in different modalities and offer varying levels of firmness. To be sure you receive the session you want, always ask about techniques and pressure intensity before booking your session. There are obviously so many factors to consider when you’re thinking about booking a massage appointment. Here at practical massage we offer an Integrated Wellness Massage so that the therapists can incorporate different techniques and different types of pressure in to their sessions to accommodate client needs. Keeping an open line of communication through out your session can be very beneficial and can ensure that you are receiving the therapy that works best for you. It is our intention to provide thoughtful therapeutic work to address issues in a variety of different ways.
