The term Yoga is a Sanskrit word with many different meanings. “Union” or “yoke” are common translations that reflect a main intent of Yoga: to enable its practitioners to unify or yoke their innermost being with its divine source.

In the western world what many call “Yoga” is typically a physical practice of postures and stretches designed to encourage strength and flexibility of the body; in addition, more western teachers are now addressing the ability of a Yoga practice to encourage strength and flexibility to the mind and the spirit.

A Yoga practice can greatly complement the practice of massage therapy. Good Yoga teachers can help us develop a greater sense of awareness of our bodies and can aid us in addressing our physical strengths and weaknesses. We encourage our clients to explore the world of Yoga through a group class or a private session.

Private and semi-private Yoga classes are available at Practical Massage Therapy or in your home or office. E-mail us or call 298-2845 for more information.

Yoga Instructors

Alexandra Smith
Alexandra began studying ballet as a child and after years of modern dance, a recommendation from a mentor brought the pilates technique into her life. Since then, she has enjoyed the many benefits; healing injuries, strengthening muscles and maintaining flexibility. What started as getting together with friends and working out, turned into a career adventure as she received her certification from Studio Lotus in Atlanta, GA. Alexandra preserves the integrity of Joseph Pilates' classical teaching method, which generates a harmonious rhythm between breath and movement for a total mind/body workout. She teaches a class that is suitable for all levles of difficulty by offering multiple exercise modifications to accommodate all body types.

Renee French
A native of Knoxville, Renee graduated from Alpha Health Institute for massage therapy and began her yoga training in 1997. With 10 years of massage experience and 3 years teaching yoga, Renee went back to school in 2004 to further her holistic studies at the Kripalu School of Ayurveda. She graduated as an Ayurvedic consultant in June 2006 with over 750 hours of training and has continued her training by interning in Colorado with her teacher and mentor, Dr. John Douillard. She incorporates her many years of experience and training into an integrative approach to Ayurvedic consultations and yoga classes.
